Occupy Providence and the city remain in talks as deadline looms

PROVIDENCE, RI – Mediation talks continue Thursday between the City of Providence and protesters occupying Burnside Park. Steven Pare, the city's public safety commissioner, said protesters' demand for a day shelter for the homeless is fraught with problems.

"What does that mean? Open a daytime shelter? Run by who and for how long? Who has the liability for the people that are in a city building, etc. etc.," asked Pare. "We don't have the resources to staff it and fund it."

The Occupy Providence protesters have made their departure contingent on the city opening a day shelter. They have been camping out there since October 15th.
