Officials suspend aircraft search
Charlestown, R.I. – The U.S. Coast Guard says it has suspended the search for a downed aircraft reported near Charlestown Beach.
The Coast Guard said Sunday that crews from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island searched an area of about 150 square miles. The Coast Guard received numerous calls Saturday night that a one-person ultralight aircraft went down in Block Island Sound.
The search has turned up nothing. The Coast Guard says that as of Sunday, there were no reports of missing aircraft or missing persons.
The Coast Guard says rescue crews from Point Judith, R.I., New London, Conn., and Montauk, N.Y., searched throughout the night. Helping the search by boats were a rescue helicopter crew and a jet crew from Air Station Cape Cod.
