Providence, RI – Federal officials have approved construction plans for the nation's first offshore wind farm. The 130-turbine Cape Wind project in the Nantucket Sound has already secured the necessary major state approvals and also has an agreement to sell half its power ratified by Massachusetts state regulators. The 468-megawatt wind farm is estimated to cost 2-billion-dollars or more, and construction is scheduled to begin this fall. Rhode Island is considering a similar off-shore wind farm off the coast of Block Island.
