Providence, R.I. – Three Providence police officers arrested in a drug-dealing investigation have made a brief court appearance.
A judge entered not guilty pleas yesterday for the three officers. He ordered Officer Robert Hamlin and Detective Joseph Colanduono to remain held without bail. Sgt. Stephen Gonsalves was released on $10,000 personal recognizance.
The three officers were arrested in March as part of a state police drug investigation that has resulted in the indictment of 24 people.
The officers have been suspended without pay. They did not speak during their arraignments in Providence Superior Court. A lawyer for Hamlin declined comment. Lawyers for the other two officers did not return calls for comment.
Colanduono was a narcotics detective at the time of his arrest. Gonsalves is a former driver for Providence Mayor David Cicilline. Hamlin was a school resource officer.
