PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Jane Pickens Theater in Newport needs $55,000 so it can play digital movies. Most distributors will switch to digital-only films in the next year and the theater needs upgrades to play them.
Owner Kathy Staab hopes the community will help support the theater's kickstarter campaign. "We need to add this equipment and it's expensive" says Staab. "And we need the community to help us with this. We're very much a community effort here at the Pickens."
The kickstarter campaign launched on Wednesday and will end in late December. All $55,000 dollars must be raised for the Pickens to receive any of the kickstarter pledges. The theater will also hold a fundraiser screening of Cinema Paradiso on December 13th.
The Jane Pickens Theater has evolved with the decades. It was built in 1834 as a Zion Episcopal Church and was converted to a theater in 1919. It recently had its heating system replaced and now has a liquor license.
