PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University history professor emeritus Gordon Wood will receive the National Humanities Medal from President Obama at a White House ceremony Wednesday.
The medal honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation's understanding of the humanities. Wood is being honored for his scholarship on the founding of the nation and the drafting of the Constitution.
Wood is the author of a 1992 Pulitzer Prize winning book called The Radicalism of the American Revolution. Another book he authored was a finalist for last year's Pulitzer.
Of the humanities medal being conferred on him, Wood says he hopes it draws attention to the field of history, which he calls the "ultimate humanistic discipline."
