Providence council moves forward on road bond
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence City Council Thursday approved a proposal asking voters to borrow 40 million dollars to improve city streets.
On a 12-to-nothing vote, the council voted to give Mayor Angel Taveras control over how the money would be spent.
City Council Majority Leader Seth Yurdin says that approach is better than giving councilors discretion over some of the road-repair money. "This is absolutely a victory for good government, to make sure that we're doing this in a non-political way based on the condition of the roads throughout the city and we're glad the council supported it."
The proposal to borrow the 40 million dollars has to be approved by the City Council one more time before it would go to voters.
