Providence getting better at recycling
By FLO JONIC
PROVIDENCE, RI – The city of Providence says its new "big green can" recycling initiative has been a big success. Just six weeks after it was launched, recycling rates have risen nearly 40 percent according to the mayor's office. Before the Big Green Can campaign launched in late September, the city's recycling rate stood below 15 percent.
Since the program began the recycling rate has increased to more than 20 percent - an overall improvement of nearly 40 percent.
For every ton of recyclables residents put into their new green cans, the city saves $32.
