Providence School District Appoints Interim Superintendent

Jun 2, 2015

Providence has named the head of an education consulting firm to lead its school district, while the school board prepares to launch an official search for a new superintendent.

School board members tapped Chris Maher, president of the firm Mass Insight Education, as interim superintendent on Monday night. District spokeswoman Christina Spaight O'Reilly says Maher is eligible to apply for the permanent post.

Current Providence Superintendent Susan Lusi has announced she will step down after this school year, citing a desire to pursue other professional opportunities.

Based in Boston, Maher's firm Mass Insight Education recently authored a report critical of staffing at the central administration building in Providence, which is the states largest school district.

The firm may also be familiar to readers who follow the Central Falls School District. Incoming Superintendent Victor Capellan worked at Mass Insight after a stint as Central Falls Deputy Superintendent. Capellan, who oversaw the reorganization of Central Falls High School, will succeed veteran Superintendent Fran Gallo when she steps down this summer.
