Providence Seeks Audit Of Local Non-Profit

Jan 15, 2014

The city of Providence is seeking to audit the non-profit organization the Urban League of Rhode Island.

The League is trying to sell their headquarters, despite a contract with the city.

In 1990 Providence sold the Urban League of Rhode Island their current headquarters for one dollar.

The non-profit moved into the building under the condition that it would be returned to the city, if the group ever left.

Now the Providence Journal reports that Urban League wants to sell its headquarters for $2.6 million.

The paper reports that the Urban League is trying to sell the property to pay off some two-million dollars in debt.

But the city needs to approve the final sale, and wants to make sure the organization has its finances in check.

An accounting firm will be at the non-profit this week to determine how much an audit will cost.
