Providence selects pedestrian bridge design
By MEGAN HALL
Providence, RI – By MEGAN HALL
Providence has chosen the winner of its design competition for a pedestrian walk way on the foundation of the old I-195 highway bridge. The design comes from inFORM Studio, an out of state firm with offices in Michigan, New York, and South Carolina.
Providence Mayor David Cicilline chose the winning design among two finalists. He says he was immediately drawn to inFORM's proposal. "It was a design that immediately when you view it, you can see it's very inviting," Cicilline says. "It looks like the kind of place that you'd be drawn to, so for me it was an easy choice."
The Department of Transportation expects to complete construction of the bridge in 2013. It will be partially paid for with two million dollars originally set aside to pay for the demolition of the granite foundations for the old interstate bridge.
