Providence City Solicitor Jeffrey Padwa is backing the ability of the City Council’s Finance Committee to change its chairman.
The ruling is the latest volley in whether John Igliozzi will continue as FinCom chairman. Igliozzi announced earlier this month he would leave, but had second thoughts and abruptly ended a somewhat bizarre meeting to consider the issue Monday eveing.
In a three-page opinion, Padwa writes:
It is my legal opinion that the members of the Finance Commitee maintain the power to elect the chairperson at all times, and the concomitant ability to replace that individual should they so choose. The vehicle through which this may be accomplished is the Motion to Rescind. With proper notice in the committee call, that Motion would be effective on a majority vote.
David Salvatore has led a 3-member anti-Igliozzi faction in pushing for the chairman’s ouster.
