Providence votes to close five schools

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence School Board has voted to close several elementary schools and a middle school despite strong objections from some parents.

In a meeting that lasted well into the night, the Board approved a plan, which calls for the closure five schools, including Asa Messer Elementary School, Messer Annex, Flynn Elementary, Windmill Elementary, and West Broadway Elementary. Bridgham Middle School will become and elementary school.

Parents stood up in their seats and turned their backs to the board as it became clear that all of the closures would pass. Several left the meeting in tears, and City Councilman Nicholas Narducci says he will call for the resignation of the entire school board.

School officials had to be escorted out by police as hundreds of parents yelled verbal insults. Some also called for a recall of Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, who did not attend the meeting.
