This September, Rhode Island’s Department of Human Services launches a new online portal for health and social service benefits. It’s the state’s biggest IT project ever. 

The system has cost millions to develop but officials say it will save the state money in the long run. For this week’s The Pulse, we speak with DHS head Melba Depeña Affigne to learn more about how Rhode Islanders will access Medicaid, food stamps, and more when the system goes live – and how it might reduce fraud.
