Raimondo bringing in experienced campaign veteran as chief of staff

State Treasurer Gina Raimondo is hiring Andrew Roos, an experienced campaign operative who helmed Myrth York's 2002 gubernatorial general election campaign, as her chief of staff, RIPR has learned. The move is the latest signal that Raimondo is very likely to run for governor in 2014.

Raimondo's chief of staff since 2011, Joe Pratt, will reportedly get a different job within her office.

"It's a great get," a source familiar with Roos says of Raimondo's decision to hire him. "If I was running a campaign anywhere, he would be at the top of my list."

Raimondo spokeswoman Joy Fox couldn't be reached for comment.

York ran a sharp Democratic primary campaign in 2002 that defeated Sheldon Whitehouse, now a US senator. York lost the general election to Republican Don Carcieri. Roos originally served as field director on the York team, and moved up to campaign manager for the general election after the departure of Dave Noble.

Roos has most recently worked for Google, according to his LinkedIn profile. He has worked for a number of other gubernatorial candidates besides York and brings a wealth of campaign experience: he's done campaign work for former Iowa governor Chet Culver and Delaware Governor Jack Markell, among others.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, a likely gubernatorial candidate in 2014, has stockpiled an array of seasoned operatives in his administration. Raimondo's move to hire Roos represents a recognition that she needs a chief of staff with deeper political skills and experience than Pratt, who came from the private sector before joining her staff.

Roos once ran a sports memorabilia company, according to his LinkedIn profile, before collecting a philosophy degree from Notre Dame. Roos also studied philosophy at Brown, culminating in an ABD (all but dissertation).
