Reed Praises Hagel as Secretary of Defense

Senator Jack Reed says Chuck Hagel  will provide outstanding leadership heading up the Pentagon. Reed says this is a critical moment for the US with national security threats and a continuing presence in Afghanistan.

Reed says Hagel brings unique abilities to the job. "He’s one of the few Secretaries of Defense that have actually seen ground combat. He’s also been a successful business man, he’s been the second in charge of the Veteran’s Administration under President Reagan, he’s been a United States Senator, and he’s been in the last several years teaching at Georgetown University so I can’t think of anyone with that range of experience.”

Despite the wrangling over Hagel’s nomination, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse says he expects lawmakers will support Hagel once he’s in place at the Pentagon.
