Reed praises Petraeus in wake of McChrystal dismissal

Providence, R.I. – Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union", Senator Jack Reed, a member of the Armed Services committee, had high praise for Gen. David Petraeus, who is taking over Afghanistan commanding duties from the disgraced Gen. Stanley McChrystal.

"General Petraeus will get on the ground. He's been very effective in pulling together in Iraq not only the American effort but the host country and I think he'll be equally successful in Afghanistan," Reed said.

And in a month with record high casualties, Reed warned of a tough summer ahead for the U.S. and its allies.

"We're going into the home ground of the Taliban," Reed said. "They've had years to re-constitute themselves. They have been running these areas for years now and the idea that we walk in and they run away I think was never contemplated."

Reed expressed confidence that U.S. troops will begin a gradual withdrawal next summer.
