A bevy of prominent Rhode Island Democrats are hosting a June 12 fundraiser for Michigan Congressman Gary Peters, who is trying to vault into the US Senate seat being vacated by Carl Levin.
The host committee for the 6:30-8:30 pm event at Jacky's Waterplace and Sushi Bar is led by US Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, and Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts, as well as Zachary Mandell; Mark Mandell; Ken Robinson; Donald R. Sweitzer; Amy Gabarra; Gerry Harrington; Chris Vitale; Jennifer Bramley; Bill Fischer; Matthew Jerzyk; and Arianne Corrente Lynch. The committee is still in formation.
Suggested contributions for the fundraiser run from $100 to $1,000.
Peters' campaign is being managed by West Warwick native Paul Tencher, perhaps best known for piloting Democratic US Senator Joe Donnelly of Indiana's winning 2012 battle over Republican Richard Mourdock.
A recent poll by the Detroit Free Press and a Michigan TV station showed Peters with a 44 percent-39 percent lead over Republican rival Terry Lynn Land, with about 18 percent of voters undecided.
Control of the US Senate is being heavily contested in elections this November. The New York Times currently gives Democrats a slight edge for retaining control of the chamber.
