Regional ports predicting record cruise ship season

Portland, Maine – New England ports are seeing a bright spot on the horizon as they prepare for what they expect will be a record number of cruise ships during the tourism season this year.

New England and Canada's Maritime Provinces have been growing in popularity among cruise lines, and this year could be the busiest yet.

Maine ports are expecting 335 cruise ship calls this year, up from 281 last year. Boston is anticipating a record 300,000-plus cruise ship passengers to pass through its port.

Harbor master Charlie Phippen said 39 cruise ships called on Maine's Bar Harbor when he started the job 11 years ago. This year, 119 ships are expected. He says that's proof New England has become an established cruise ship region.
