Removal of sunken barge near Newport Pell Bridge expected this week
PROVIDENCE, RI – The company that has been hired to remove a sunken barge from beneath the Pell Bridge says work may begin Thursday. The barge sank about a month ago. It was being used as a staging area for painting the bridge.
It's thought to weigh about 300 tons.
Paul Hankins is vice president of Donjon Marine, the company that's been hired to remove the barge. He said the timeline depends on how long it takes to put slings underneath the sunken barge.
