Republicans debate tonight in 2nd Congressional District race

Providence, R.I. – Three of the four Republicans running in the 2nd Congressional District will square off tonight in a televised debate.

Republicans Mark Zaccaria, William Clegg, and Michael Gardiner will take part during the League of Women Voters-ABC6 debate at 8 pm. Another candidate, Donald Robbio, isn't included, since he didn't meet the league's rules for participation.

Zaccaria, a business consultant and former North Kingstown town councilor, ran against incumbent Democrat James Langevin in 2006. Clegg is a retired Textron executive and retired army reserve colonel. Gardiner is a self-employed lawyer.

The winner of the three-way Republican battle will be chosen during the September 14 primary. On the Democratic side, Langevin is being challenged by Betsy Dennigan and Ernest Greco.

Tonight's debate will be simulcast by WRNI from 8 to 9 pm.
