Rhode Island Mall bumps up closing date

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island Mall is closing a little earlier than expected.

Frank Silva, the owner of First Place Sports at Rhode Island Mall, thought he had until May 22nd to vacate the premises. But he learned last week that the closing date has been moved up to May 1st.

"The manager of the mall came down about a week ago and spoke to some of the workers in this mall - not including me - and said the doors would be shutting at the end of April," says Silva.

The mall has been failing for years. Other than the anchor stores, Sears, Walmart and Kohl's, there are only four stores left including First Place Sports.

Silva says he's still looking for new space. "It's tough right now. We're just hoping some of our customers will follow us and we'll get some new customers and keep going," he says.

Although the mall will close, the anchor stores will stay open.
