RI GOP Trying to Cultivate Female Candidates

There's a big gender gap for Republican women in the General Assembly; of 113 legislative seats, there are only two GOP female lawmakers: Patricia Morgan and Doreen Costa. By comparison, there are 28 female Democrats between the House and Senate.

Perhaps with that gap in mind, the RI GOP is hosting a "Getting Ready to Run" event for female candidates, Saturday, September 28, at the Providence Marriott Downtown (on Orms Street), from 8:30 am to 5 pm. Registration is $50. (UPDATE: The RI GOP has since decided to waive the registration fee.)

The keynote speaker for the workshop is Marilinda Garcia, a state rep in New Hampshire, who says she first won election at age 23.

An email outlining the event say it's designed to "empower women to run for public office, run a campaign or a local or county Republican Party."
