Providence, R.I. – Governor Carcieri is standing behind controversial legislation that he says will help jumpstart Rhode Island's renewable energy industry.
Critics call the legislation for a wind farm off of Block Island a special deal to help Deepwater Wind. They also object to above-market prices for electricity from the proposed wind farm.
But Carcieri says Deepwater's demonstration project offers stability on energy prices.
"What I know is the wind power cost is fixed," Carcieri says. "We know exactly what that is. So this is an artificial argument. We've got to get serious as a state and a nation to have alternatives."
