CONCORD, N.H. – Authorities say a hiker who lost his way descending the Valley Way trail on Mount Madison has been rescued.
Lt. Doug Gralenski of New Hampshire Fish and Game says 51-year-old James Answorth Jr. of Charleston, R.I., was hiking alone Saturday when he lost the trail. He began following the drainage of a brook that parallels the trail and fell into the brook.
It's not clear whether Answorth got lost because he was hiking without a source of light or if he was hampered by blinding snow squalls.
Answorth was unable to call 911 right away because of a lack of cell phone service. Gralenski said early Sunday that rescuers had found Answorth and were trying to warm him up and help him off the mountain.
Gralenski says Answorth has no debilitating injuries.
