Providence, R.I. – The percentage of RI high school seniors taking the SAT exam is on the rise, but scores are down in two of the three tested subject areas.
There was a five percent increase in participation by the class of 2010, with 5,718 seniors taking the exam. Math score averages were up a point to 488. Reading scores dropped a point to 485 and writing scores dropped four points to 478.
Scores in each category were below the national averages.
Meanwhile, the College Board says there was an increase in advanced placement exam participation and performance. Sixty percent received a passing score, a 10 percent improvement from the class of 2009.
