(PROVIDENCE, RI) Speaking on national television Sunday, Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed offered a spirited defense of Chuck Hagel’s nomination to be national defense secretary. Reed swatted away the notion that Hagel is temperamentally unsuited to the job.
Reed was one of two guests on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulous.”
The other guest, Tenneessee Republican Senator Bob Corker suggested Chuck Hagel is temperamentally unsuited to lead the Pentagon. Stephanopoulous followed up with this question:
"You have questions about his temperament? I think there are numbers of staffers who are coming forth now just talking about the way he has dealt with them. I have certainly questions about a lot of things."
Reed jumped to Hagel’s defense, saying the former Nebraska Republican Senator brings unique qualities to the job as a decorated Vietnam veteran.
"I know there’s a close relationship between the President and Chuck Hagel. I’ve traveled with them. I understand it. But I also understand that Chuck has the wherewithal and the ability to speak truth to power. He’s demonstrated that throughout his entire career. That is a value extraordinarily important to the President. I think he recognizes that. And that will be one of his virtues as Secretary of Defense."
Reed predicted that Hagel will ultimately win over his critics and be confirmed.
