RI Speaker Fox against override of Chafee `Chose Life' plate veto

House Speaker Gordon Fox says he does not favor a General Assembly override of Governor Lincoln Chafee’s veto of legislation that would create an anti-abortion `Choose Life’ Rhode Island license plate that would serve as a fund-raising vehicle for an evangelical Christian anti-abortion group.

Fox’s comments came during an interview with Rhode Island Public Radio’s Political Roundtable panelists Scott MacKay, Flo Jonic and Maureen Moakley. Fox noted that he a long-time supporter of abortion rights who did not vote for the `Choose Life' plate when it was approved  in the House.

The speaker also commented on the Sakonnet Bridge toll issue, the 38 Studios bond payments, state tax policy, the RI economy and took political questions. Fox also said he strongly supports Chafee's approval of a measure approved by the Assembly that allows child care workers to organize unions.

The interviews can be heard tomorrow morning (Friday) on Rhode Island Public Radio on Morning Edition. The speaker also said that he has no immediate plans of marrying his longtime partner, Marcus Lafond, but said someday he hopes to ``tie the knot’’ with Lafond. Fox, the nation’s only openly gay House speaker, said he was proud to have has a crucial role in making Rhode Island one of 12 states in the U.S. to recognize same gender marriage.
