RIPTA to Roll Out Changes in Series of Public Meetings

Apr 18, 2013

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority is asking riders to chime in on proposed changes to the bus system. RIPTA is looking at everything from removing bus lines to changing the look of its major hub in downtown Providence.

Facing a yawning budget gap, RIPTA’s been taking a hard look at operations. Its proposed changes include adding routes, eliminating some, and better coordinating others.

RIPTA’s most popular routes: the #20 that goes down Elmwood Ave, the #27 Broadway/Manton Ave and the #56 that travels Chalkstone Blvd, those would see more amenities like bus shelters and trash cans. They’d also be more accessible to seniors and disabled riders.

RIPTA is also looking at changing the face of its hub in Kennedy Plaza by creating more open, green space.

RIPTA wants to hear from riders on the proposed changes. Its holding a series of public meetings that start May 29th and run through June 6th.
