RISD to reopen galleries this week
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The RISD Museum in Providence is preparing to reopen some galleries that have been closed for the last year for renovations.
The ancient, medieval and early Renaissance galleries are due to reopen to the public on Friday. Renovations include restoration of door moldings, wood flooring and changes to way artifacts are displayed. Curator of ancient art, Gina Boromeo, says it's a major improvement.
"Before we started this re-installation, there were built in cases," Boromeo says. "Some of those shelves were much too high and did not allow for the viewers to look at the pieces from the side, or even head on."
The RISD Museum is holding a community day on Saturday, which will be free to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.. Next month, officials are due to unveil a re-installation of the museum's European Galleries.
