Scharfenberg, Former Providence Phoenix News Editor, Headed to the Boston Globe

May 21, 2014

Kudos and congrats to former Providence Phoenix news editor David Scharfenberg, who is set to join the Boston Globe's Statehouse reporting team.

Scharfenberg left the Phoenix last year to cover politics for WBUR, the Boston public radio station. He begins at the Globe June 9, as one of two new hires at the daily.

Scharfenberg's late father, Kirk, was a former city editor, metro editor, deputy managing editor, and editorial page editor at the Globe.

David Scharfenberg worked at the Providence Journal before being laid off during economic cuts and landing at the Phoenix, succeeding yours truly in 2009. He did a fine job covering Rhode Island politics and other subjects before moving on to public radio.

The Globe has hired a number of former Boston Phoenix employees over the years, including Renee Loth, Gareth Cook, Mark Jurkowitz, Yvonne Abraham, Scot Lehigh, Ellen Barry, and Stephen Heuser.
