Senators lobby for online sales tax

PROVIDENCE, RI – U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse will be in Warwick today promoting their support for an online sales tax. Rhode Island's two senators recently joined with eight of their Senate colleagues in introducing the "Marketplace Fairness Act." It would require online retailers and catalog merchants to collect state sales taxes. Such a bill would generate an estimated $70 million annually for the state of Rhode Island. It would exempt online retailers who have less than half-a-million dollars a year in sales.
