Skeletal remains have been found in a building being renovated on Prairie Avenue in south Providence. The bones, which included a skull and rib bones are believed to be human, but authorities won’t know for sure until an autopsy is conducted.
Providence police spokesman David Lapatin says construction workers found the bones Wednesday afternoon in the basement of a century-old brick factory building.
"It looks like there was an old shaft – either a dumb waiter or an elevator – that was taken out. And on the bottom floor it looks like it was filled in with some brick and then cemented over that. And the body was found within the brick," said Lapatin.
It’s unclear how old the bones are. The death is being treated as suspicious.
