Solomon in lead for 2014 campaign funds
By IAN DONNIS
PROVIDENCE, RI – Providence City Council President Michael Solomon has the biggest campaign war chest of anyone on the city council. Solomon is expected to run for mayor in 2014 if Angel Taveras campaigns for governor.
Solomon had almost 114-thousand dollars on hand, according to his most recent campaign filing. That's more than the amount raised by the five next closest city councilors.
Taveras is considered a possible candidate for governor in 2014. The mayor, along with Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, is part of the honorary committee for a fundraiser for Solomon this Monday.
The councilor closest to Solomon's war chest, Terry Hassett, is considered a possible candidate for secretary of state in 2014. Meanwhile, four Providence city councilors had less than one thousand dollars apiece in their most recent campaign finance reports. And three councilors have past due reports going back as far as 2009.
