South Kingstown is the 27th safest community in the nation, according to data from the national organization Neighborhood Scout.
It reports the total number of violent and property crimes per 1,000 residents in towns of 25,000 residents or more. Despite being the state's largest town and the home of the University of Rhode Island, South Kingstown was the only Rhode Island town ranked in the top 100. South Kingstown Police Chief Vincent Vespia said the town's high ranking is due to more than just the police.
"This is a great community, and we continually receive wonderful support from the citizens of South Kingstown and also from the town administration," said Vespia.
Franklin, Massachusetts, a town 30 miles north of Providence, is ranked the safest in the country.
