Providence, R.I. – Dissident Democrats say they plan to make another challenge to House Speaker Gordon Fox
Representative Gregory Schadone of North Providence says Fox will face a challenge in the run-up to the new legislative year in January.
Schadone got 14 votes, compared with 51 for Fox, when he challenged Fox for the speakership last February. The challenge this time around, says Schadone, will most likely come from either himself or Representative Thomas Winfield of Smithfield.
Winfield says he hopes dissident Democrats will increase their support through the November election. But a number of the Democrats who beat incumbents in the September primary have pledged their support to Fox.
Fox tells WRNI he's confident he has the votes to maintain the speakership, if he wins reelection to his state rep seat next month.
