The head of St. George’s School will not seek an extension of his contract wheni it expires in the Spring of 2017.

“I am enormously grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of St. George’s,” said Eric Peterson in a written statement Tuesday. “I am hopeful that announcing this decision now will allow for a thorough, national search for a successor, a process that requires substantial lead time and significant effort.”

Peterson announced his decision just days after the end of a state police investigation into allegations of sexual abuse at the school. The investigation concluded with no criminal prosecutions. Peterson said he will remain committed to St. George’s over the coming year.

“The board has accepted his decision with appreciation for his many contributions to our school,” said Chair of St. George’s Board of Trustees Leslie Heaney.

The school’s board has hired a firm specializing in heads-of-school searches, Spencer Stewart, to aid in the search for Peterson’s replacement.
