PROVIDENCE, R.I. – State colleges and universities are asking voters to approve a $78 million bond issue next month.
A large portion of the funds would build a new chemistry building at the University of Rhode Island. Department Chair Bill Ewer says the current building was designed before World War II.
"Chemistry methodologies have changed in the past 70 years," Ewer says. "On top of that, in terms of our teaching mission, which is very important to the university, we are space limited and there are more students who want to take labs than we have space for."
Ballot measure two would also provide $17 million for art facilities at Rhode Island College. University officials say the construction projects will create more than 1,000 jobs.
