(PROVIDENCE, RI)Rhode Island’s new state poet laureate says his goal is to saturate the state in verse.
Dr. Rick Benjamin believes that poetry can change people’s lives. He cites the case of elderly people for whom poetry becomes a vehicle to express long-suppressed emotions.
"I’ve seen people even at the eleventh hour in their lives and I’m talking about 97 year olds or 87 year olds who’ve been able to say things and express things in poetry that had it not been for that medium they might not have been able to do so."
Being state poet laureate is a labor of love. It pays just one thousand dollars a year for travel expenses.
