Providence, R.I. – State Rep. Peter Palumbo, of Cranston, has filed an immigration bill modeled on a controversial Arizona law. Palumbo's bill would require police to question people when there's "reasonable suspicion" that they're illegally in the U.S. "The number of illegals in the state of Rhode Island, we guess, is somewhere around 40,000 people," Palumbo says. "That's a huge drain on our social programs, our educational institutions, our medical industry." But Rhode Island ACLU Director Steve Brown says Palumbo's bill would trample on people's civil liberties. Palumbo says he plans this session to request a hearing for his bill, but he's not overly optimistic about the outlook for it becoming law.
