PROVIDENCE, RI – The Tall Ships leave Newport today in grand style. 14 ships will muster at noon at Castle Hill to begin the procession at sea.
One of the crew for the event is Jerry Wiegand. He's aboard a ship from the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, The Gazela. He's enjoyed his stay in Newport saying, "Seamen's church is right here. They've got breakfast, washing machines, important stuff, library, the whole thing."
THE Gazela was built in 1901 to carry fishermen to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. More than a century later, the ship still spends a lot of time at sea according to Wiegand. "We're an event ship; we go to the parties."
The Gazela is a celebrity of sorts as it appeared with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in the movie "Interview with the Vampire."
At the end of the parade the ships will take part in the "Departure of the Tall Ships to Sea." That's expected to happen at 4 p.m.
