Providence restaurants did a brisk business this weekend as a convention of foodies descended on the capital city.
For the uninitiated, a taste trekker is a person who plans their vacations around food. Over the weekend some 150 of these people visited Providence for the first Taste Trekkers Convention. They listened to top chefs, heard lectures on subjects as obscure as Memphis barbecue and chocolate from Madagascar, and of course they ate. Matt Bowie came from Somerville, Massachusetts.
"What’s the best thing you had while you were here and where did you have it?"
"There was a ceviche that we had at one of the breakaway sessions. I don’t remember what the name of it was, do you? LOS ANDES. Los Andes? Really a spicy ceviche they did. It was fantastic," said Bowie.
Another Massachusetts foodie, Shana Walters, left Providence with a different culinary memory.
"Oh there was this bite of pork belly that a chef did with the ice cider pairing in one of the breakout sessions. That was fantastic," said Walters.
Providence is well known as a foodie mecca. It ranked number one for restaurants in Travel and Leisure’s “America’s Favorite Cities” report of 2012.
