Tiverton Looks to Join Lawsuit Blocking Sakonnet Bridge Tolls

The Tiverton Town Council meets Tuesday night to vote on joining Portsmouth and Bristol in challenging the tolls that will be placed on the Sakonnet River Bridge this summer. The seven-member Tiverton Town Council is expected to join the lawsuit.

Just about everybody in Tiverton uses the Sakonnet River Bridge and they’re not one bit happy about the prospect of paying a toll for the privilege starting July 1st.

Construction of the toll booths is already underway, even though two towns, Portsmouth and Bristol, are challenging the legality of the tolls in federal court. And Tuesday night, the Tiverton Town Council is expected to join the lawsuit, said Tiverton town administrator James Goncalo.

“In essence I guess we’re saying that it didn’t go through the proper channels and that it’s in essence illegal,” said Goncalo.

The tolls range from $.75 for drivers with a Rhode Island E-ZPass to $5.25 for anyone without an E-ZPass. The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority said toll revenue is needed to maintain the span.

A hearing will be held June 10th on Portsmouth’s motion to enjoin the Authority from imposing the tolls.
