Unemployed seek trucker jobs

PROVIDENCE, RI – Manuel Nunes has been out of work for two years. A victim of New England's failed textile industry, he has six children to support.

"It's tough," he says. "A guy my age makes it tough to get a job. I'm in my 50's. Makes it a little harder."

Nunes was one of 72 people who applied for 40 jobs with Crowley Transportation Services, a Massachusetts trucking company.

Crowley recruiter Bob Davidson says business is good.

"We've been strong for the last year and a half," he says. "It's been up and up and up and we've seen a dramatic rise. We've had explosive growth in Rhode Island particularly... Rhode Island and south shore Massachusetts in the trucking industry."

The company selected 38 applicants for orientation. If they pass criminal background checks, drug testing, a road test and have good driving records they'll be hired.
