URI investigates intoxication cases
By FLO JONIC
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Rhode Island is investigating dozens of cases of intoxication Tuesday night.
University spokesman Dave Lavalle says paramedics had to treat 34 people for inebriation. Eleven of them had to be hospitalized. Eighteen of the calls for help came from the Ryan Center during a hip hop concert where alcohol was banned.
Lavalle says students who were drinking illegally will be referred to the school's judicial process.
"That's a student affairs process and the sanctions range anywhere from a warning to suspension from school, so we're not taking this lightly," he says. "But we don't want people to think that the environment was unsafe or there was a mass problem with rowdyism and other kinds of disorder."
Lavallee says the Ryan Center had 100 people working the concert including six EMT's and eight police officers.
