URI unveils restored murals lost for decades

PROVIDENCE, RI – Historic murals painted during the Depression are back on display at the University of Rhode Island. Rhode Island artist Gino Conti painted the murals of art deco styled figures depicting scenes relating to work and education.

The paintings were a WPA federal project, and they hung in Edwards Hall until remodeling in the 60's covered them up. Construction workers uncovered the murals in the summer of 2010 during a renovation project, and the restoration work was done this past summer.

Conservators mounted the paintings on stretchers, touched them up and melted away adhesive stuck to the back.
