State police have arrested a Warwick attorney on charges of embezzling from an elderly client.  The investigation was launched at the request of the state Supreme Court.

Warwick attorney Janet Mastronardi was arrested at her Warwick law office Wednesday. The charges: embezzlement and unlawful appropriation from an elderly client.

Rhode Island state police say the lawyer apparently has a gambling problem.

State Police Major Michael Winquist says she apparently used the money to gamble. "During the time frame of approximately 2006 to 2012 Ms. Mastronardi accumulated a net loss of close to $300,000 at area casinos. The net losses suggest that she gambled frequently.

According to state police, Mastronardi was appointed guardian of the client in 2005 as a result of the client’s deteriorating health and mental condition. Five years later Mastronardi allegedly closed two of her client’s investment accounts and deposited more than $200,000 into two newly opened bank accounts. State police say Mastronardi stole $144,000 of her client’s money by writing a series of checks over the next year.

Mastronardi was arraigned and released on $10,000 personal recognizance. If convicted she faces up to 40 years in prison and close to $500,000 in fines.
