Warwick Mayor Puts the Brakes on New Mayoral Academy
Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian has halted public hearings on a proposed Mayoral Academy Charter School.
Avedisian, who is the mayor sponsoring the proposal, says numerous issues including West Warwick's potential to pull out of the proposal, preceded the request.
"Based on a number of recent developments, most notably potential changes in participation from the Town of West Warwick and the West Warwick Public Schools, I am respectfully requesting that the Rhode Island Department of Education postpone any hearings and/or any action on the proposed Kent County Prep mayoral academy," Avedisian said in a written statement.
Avedisian says organizers will have to modify their proposal before the effort can proceed.
State Education officials have canceled the hearings, which had been scheduled for next week, and no new date has been set.
The mayoral academy was intended to serve students in Coventry, Warwick and West Warwick.
