Westerly Armory wins restoration prize
By Catherine Welch
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Hampton Hotels' "Save-A-Landmark" program has selected the Westerly Armory as one of its projects for next year.
Towns and cities nominate a landmark and then the public votes for five projects to be restored. Save-A-Landmark's Chris Epting said they look for projects that are prominent in the local, cultural scene.
"What does it mean to the community, how many generations has it affected? Is there anything else like it in the area? What's its unique role in terms of the people who live around it," said Epting.
The Save-A-Landmark program will help restore the armory cellar into a meeting place. 108-year-old Westerly Armory beat out the Beavertail Lighthouse in Jamestown and Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport.
Other projects include a plantation in Delaware, lighthouse in Hawaii and museum in Montana.
