Woonsocket funeral director charged with embezzlement

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island State Police have charged a Woonsocket funeral director with embezzlement and forgery. Officials say 38-year-old Todd Lauzon has been stealing money from the escrow clients of clients who prepaid for funeral services.

The charges involve three victims who lost over $27,000. But eighteen other victims have been identified and additional charges may be lodged.

State police Captain James Demers says Lauzon is suspected of embezzling in excess of $100,000 over the past decade.

"Well, he's admitted to doing this. He's been cooperative. He was using the money to pay bills on his personal accounts," Demers says.

Lauzon was arraigned Wednesday. He was released on $15,000 bail.
